What you need to know before you start testing.

Since November 2023, Google Play requires all new personal developer accounts to run a 'Closed Test' before publishing an app to production. This test requires a minimum of 12 unique testers to opt-in and test your app continuously for 14 consecutive days. If you fail to meet this requirement, Google will reject your production application.

Google Play Terminology

The crucial definitions you need to know to successfully navigate the closed testing requirements.

Play Integrity API

Google's sophisticated anti-bot system. It verifies that app installations are genuine and that devices are secure from tampering.

App Bundle (AAB)

The modern, mandatory publishing format for Google Play. It replaces the older APK format to optimize app sizes dynamically for different devices.

Closed Testing Track

A secure, private testing environment in the Play Console. This is where the strict 12-tester, 14-day continuous testing requirement must be fulfilled.

Opt-in URL

The unique, encrypted link generated by Google Play. Testers must click this specific link to legally join your testing program and be counted.
